If you have ever thought about practicing some type of stress relieving yoga, but you’ve never tried it because the poses seem difficult and only fit for a contortionist, think again after watching this video by Patricia Walden.  Yoga poses to relieve stress can be powerful and incredibly calming if done properly.

It is widely known and believed by medical experst that stress and chronic illness are closely related.  Unmanaged or built up stress can lead to many chronic diseases and the best prevention is to practice daily natural therapies.  Yoga is safe for most people, but if you are over 60 or are ill or disabled you must consult your physician before starting any exercise program.

The best way to learn yoga is in a classroom with an experienced an qualified teacher, although you can get some very good beginner Iyengar yoga dvds, such as the Yoga for Beginners series by Patricia Walden.  Her videos have helped me be in control when faced with a problem.

There are several yoga styles, but the most popular and less difficult style is Hatha, also called Iyengar, named after B.K.S. Iyengar who modified the original Hatha postures and added props such as blocks, chairs and cushions to make it easier and safer for Western students.

Generally, yoga classes include 15 to 30 different postures, which help you breathe deeper and decrease your blood pressure as well as avoid sudden increasing in heart rates when faced with emotional stressors.

Introduced in America by a yoga master in 1839, yoga is the first foreign alternative therapy that became highly popular, and for a good reason.  Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated yoga poses are beneficial to your overall health and can help with diseases such as asthma, back pain, diabetes, heart disease and many others.
