Causes of Migraines–Avoid This Food Additive
Although there is a genetic component among the causes of migraines, there has been a recent update in traditional medicine linking higher levels of glutamate to these agonizing headaches. Nevertheless, alternative medicine doctors have known this for some time and have been recommending their patients to take certain vitamin supplements such as B1, B6, B12 and COQ10 in high doses, which have been proven effective.
Studies indicate that the common food additive MSG (monosodium glutamate) increases blood levels of glutamate significantly. Glutamate can enter the brain and trigger migraines, it also contributes to the severity of the pain since it also intensifies sensitivity to all kinds of pain.
Now the pharmaceutical companies are on a race to develop migraine medications to block or clear glutamate from the system. Currently, many patients with mild migraine are effectively treated with drugs, however very few people with chronic or severe migraines experience a significant improvement. When drug treatment for migraines fails, many people turn to natural treatments, such as:
- Nutrition change
- Taking certain vitamin supplements
- Regular exercise
- Biofeedback
- Yoga
Migraine attacks are much more serious than simple headaches and relate to lower than normal magnesium levels, poor cellular energy production and high levels of excitotoxin glutamate , which means an excessive brain stimulation caused by elevations in glutamate in the brain. This leads to the damage and death of nerve cells.
